Our Family

When we say Pearl Valley Eggs is a family farm, we mean it. A lot of different people contribute to our success and continued growth, and we appreciate their hard work and loyalty. From our dedicated employees who care for our hens every day to the local farms that sell us feed to the retailers who carry Pearl Valley Eggs in their stores, we proudly consider them to be a part of our family farm.

Meet the Thompsons

During the 1970s, Pearl Valley Eggs founder Dave Thompson was a first grade school teacher in Joliet, Ill. As part of an experiment with his students, he began hatching eggs for a class project. Chick by chick the classroom’s flock grew, and so did Dave’s fondness for the birds. With the support of his wife, Terry, Dave began raising the hens at their family farmhouse. He would sell the eggs they laid to other teachers at his school. This was the Thompson family’s first step into the egg business.

Caring for Our Hens

As an early adopter of humane animal care practices and industry safety standards, Pearl Valley Eggs has created a farm that is focused on keeping our hens healthy and happy. Hens are checked on and cared for 365 days a year. Barns are clean and contain the latest temperature control technology to ensure ideal conditions are maintained, keeping the birds warm in winter and cool in summer. Modern cages exceed standard sizes – 27.7" X 22.6" – and have a maximum capacity of eight birds per cage, giving them ample room to move around. The computerized feed mill ensures feed is fresh and quality controlled. Each week a nutritionist makes sure food rations are accurate and frequent health checkups are conducted by a veterinarian. Additionally, multiple bio-security measures are in place to minimize the potential for risk and help prevent contamination.
